Workshop on “Brain Stem Death & Management of Prospective Organ Donor”, Fortis, Gurgaon

  • On 6th August 2014, Ms. Pallavi Kumar was invited as a panelist at a workshop titled, "Brain Stem Death & Management of Prospective Organ Donor" organized by Organ Retrieval & Transplant (FORT) along with Healthcare Federation of India (NATHEALTH) and Departments of Critical Care & Neurosciences at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon.

     

    The workshop started with a welcome address by Dr Dilpreet Brar Regional Director, FMRI. She shared with the participants that the hospital did a trial run in the morning from Gurgaon to IGI airport in less than 16 minutes by creating a "green corridor" - red light free access to see the readiness of the hospital in transporting an organ in case of a deceased donation. She also appreciated the coordinated efforts of traffic police (Both Delhi & Gurgaon), medical team from Fortis and special mention of Dr Avnish Seth Director FORT whose brain child this was. After Dr Brar's address there were speeches by Mr Anjan Bose Secretary General, NATHEALTH, Dr Ashok Seth Chairman, Cardiology Council, Fortis Group of Hospitals, and Mr Daljit Singh President, Fortis Healthcare Ltd.

     

    The workshop addressed the following areas:

                .       Organ donation in India: The Crouching Tiger

                .       Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissue Rules 2014: what is new?

                .       Apnoea Test: How I do it

                .       Declaration of Brain Death: Special situations

                .       Donor Maintenance protocol: What transplant teams expect

                .       Brain Death: Declare all; Approach all...is it feasible in India?

     

    The workshop was attended by eminent transplant surgeons, critical care specialists, neuro physicians and neuro surgeons of Delhi-NCR. To name a few: Dr A. S. Soin, (Chairman, Liver Transplantation & Regenerative Medicine, Medanta)Dr B Keshav Rao (Regional Director, Medical Operations Group, Fortis Healthcare Ltd), Dr Anil Kumar (CMO, Directorate General of Health Services), Dr Sandeep Dewan (HOD, Critical Care, FMRI), Dr Harsh Jauhari (Chairman Renal Transplant Surgey, SGRH), and Dr Samiran Nundy (Emeritus Consultant, GI Surgery & Liver Transplantation, SGRH). Also present were heads of NOTTO (Dr Vasanthi Ramesh), AORTA (Col Pankaj Puri) and NGO's like MOHAN (Ms Pallavi Kumar) and ORBO working in the field of organ donation and transplantation.

     

    The workshop was concluded with a panel discussion on " Declare all, approach all - is it feasible in india?" The panel was moderated by Dr Avnish Seth and Dr Samiran Nundy. The Panelists included -Ms Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR), Dr Sudeep Naidu (Head, GI Surg & Liver Transplantation, Army Hospital), Dr Rana Patir (Director & HOD, Neurosurgery, FMRI), Mr Mukesh (Transplant Coordinator, ORBO) and Dr Mrinal Sircar (HOD Critical Care, Fortis Hospital Noida). The panel debated on what are the hurdles in declaring brain death, the lacunae in the law, lessons to be learnt from Tamil Nadu, need for awareness etc.
