Dr. Sunil Shroff – Founder & Managing Trustee

Senior Consultant Urologist & Transplant Surgeon, Madras Medical Mission

Dr. Sunil Shroff is pioneer urologist, transplant surgeon and a social entrepreneur who has been instrumental in establishing the deceased donation and transplantation program in India. He was one of the first to publish his experience with the application of the holmium laser in urology from the Institute of Urology, London UK in collaboration with his mentor Dr. Graham Watson. He is currently the Senior Consultant Urologist at Madras Medical Mission Hospital. He performed the first kidney transplant on an HIV positive patient in India and transplant of kidneys from cobra-bitten brain death victims. As a founder trustee of MOHAN Foundation, he has been actively promoting the concept of deceased donation after brain death since 1997. Through the foundation, he has worked for policy improvements and amendment of the law to ease deceased donation in India. He has campaigned against organ commerce and believes that such activities which are reported widely by the media adversely affect public perception and acceptance of the deceased donation programme. He is also the front runner in promoting the use of computer and information technology among doctors in India to make healthcare delivery more efficient, easily accessible and affordable. He is amongst the first to start a health website “Medindia” that networks doctors and provides the public with health related information. He is the President of Medical Computer Society of India. He is the President of Nephrology, Urology and Transplantation Society of SAARC. He is a Member of National Committee for “Standardization of Digital Information to facilitate implementation of Telemedicine systems using IT – Enabled services" for Medical Council of India. He is a Member, National Committee to formulate guidelines for implementing Information technology for the Indian Healthcare industry of Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, Govt. of India. He is a member of CII committee of experts for Health for Southern India. He is the chief editor of Indian Transplant Newsletter that reaches over 2000 transplant professionals worldwide every quarter. He published the directory of PG Medical Education in India and served as an editor of several prominent medical journals. Served as Editor of the International Journal of Gulf Medical College and also Meducator Journal. Served as Medical Council of India examiner for several Universities and health care facilities to assess undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs all over India. Expert Committee Presentation on National Accreditation Processes to develop Institutions of Excellence. Founder Director – National Asthma Foundation. Trustee - Consumer Association of India. Conferred “Doctor of the Year” award from Indian Medical Association Branch, Chennai – 1995. Published a Book on “Diagnostic Medical Tests for consumers” and a Directory of Postgraduate Medical Education in India – 2000. Dr Georgi Abraham is a visiting professor at Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, Sri Venkateswara University Medical College, Tirupati & Manipal University, Manipal, Karnataka. He has served in the southern states of India and also gained experience in UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia & Kuwait. He has 156 publications to his credit & has contributed to 13 books. Read More
He has made 81 presentations in regional & international conferences. He is the founder President of the Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India. He is the editor of Indian Journal of Peritoneal Dialysis and stands in the editorial board of several journals. He is founder trustee of TANKER foundation, which provides subsidized hemodialysis treatment to underprivileged patients. He has setup a sister establishment, Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Kottayam, Kerala. He has been conferred the “International Distinguished Medal in Nephrology for 2003” by National Kidney Foundation, America.

Dr. George Kurian – Trustee

Dr. George Kurien is a renowned gastroenterologist and Professor emeritus at PIMS with wide work experience at CMC and JIPMER. He was one of the first to do colonoscopy in CMC as the Professor & Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary Department and holds a special interest towards promoting Deceased Organ Donation in India.

Dr. K. Ravindrananth – Trustee

He has contributed to the society by constructing a High School named after his father Late Shri. Seshaiah Naidu in Chiramana Village, Aspet Mandal, Nellore District. He is also actively involved in the development of hospitals for underprivileged people & housing colonies for Harijans and Backward communities.

Dr. Gullapalli N Rao, MD – Trustee

Founder-Chair, L V Prasad Eye Institute

Gullapalli N Rao founded the L V Prasad Eye Institute in 1987, after a successful career in the United States as an academic ophthalmologist. Dr Rao received his basic medical education in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and completed his postgraduate residency training in ophthalmology at the All India Institute for Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He went to the United States in 1974, where he was trained first at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, and later at the University of Rochester, School of Medicine, where he continued on the clinical faculty until his return to India in 1986. His areas of specialization include diseases of the cornea, eye banking and corneal transplantation, community eye health, eye care policy and planning. He has published nearly 300 papers in national and international journals, and has contributed several book chapters, in addition to serving on the Editorial Boards of several journals. He was a visiting Professor at several Universities in the USA, Europe, Australia and Asia and delivered many named lectures around the world. Dr Rao has been honoured with several international and national awards in recognition of his services to eye care and public health. He also holds several board and leadership positions in prominent national and international organizations and was formerly the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). He is currently the Chair of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis.

Ms. Bhavna Jagwani - Trustee

Ms. Jagwani has many feathers to her hat. She is the Vice-President of Eye Bank Society of Rajasthan (EBSR). She is a Member of the State Organ Donation and Transplant Committee (Rajasthan), a Member of the Authorization committee for sharing kidneys, a Member of the National Health Mission and she is also in the Advisory Committee of PCPNDT (Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) Act. Apart from all these responsibilities she has been designing fine jewellery since 25 years.

While delivering her third baby, she lost her vision due to a drug reaction. After losing all hope it was a miracle for her and her family when she got her vision back. This is when she truly started believing that there was a purpose in every action of God. Inspired by her own experience, she soon began her journey in social entrepreneurship with the eye-bank in Rajasthan.

In 2014, Bhavna took the initiative to start the very challenging Deceased Organ Donation and Transplantation programme in Rajasthan. Under the leadership of Ms Jagwani, MFJCF, an NGO was set up, with MOHAN Foundation (MF) as knowledge partner along with the Jaipur Citizen Forum (JCF) to take forward this mandate.
