Public Education Kiosk on Organ Donation at Sri Ramanuja Mission Trust, Korattur, Chennai

  • On 12th October, 2013 a public education kiosk on organ donation was set up by MOHAN Foundation, Chennai at Sri Ramanuja Mission Trust (SRMT), Korattur, Chennai. The stall was set up at the site of celebration on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of SRMT and the birthday of H. H. Prof. S.A.R.P.V. Chaturvedi Swamiji, Founder and Managing Trustee, SRMT, Chennai. At the event apart from the Foundation around 20 other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) participated.

     

    The information desk was manned by two representatives from the Foundation; Ms. Kavitha S, Transplant Coordinator and Mr. Ashok R, Trainee Transplant Coordinator. In their one-on-one interaction with the visitors to the stall the following aspects were emphasized upon: the need for organ donation; who can donate organs and tissues; what organs and tissues can be donated; difference between brain death, cardiac death and coma; importance of a donor card; about organ allocation and sharing and about the Tamil Nadu Network for Organ Sharing (TNOS) website.  

     

    The participants raised a few queries about organ sharing and allocation; about contraindications in donating organs and tissues; who should be contacted in case of en emergency; and can a short-sighted person donate his eyes.

     

    At the end of the session; around 15 people pledged their organs by signing the donor card.
