MOHAN Foundation conducted a Session on Organ Donation at Bibidha Bangya Samaj Samiti, Ghaziabad, Delhi-NCR

  • On 12th October, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation was organised at the Recreational Club of Bibidha Bangya Samaj Samiti, Ghaziabad, Delhi-NCR on the occasion of Durga Pooja. The Association invited MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR to conduct the session. Mr. Amit Kumar, Project Manager at the Foundation addressed the gathering and his colleague Dr. Sourabh Sharma, Transplant Coordinator assisted him.


    Bibidha Bangya Samaj Samiti is an organisation comprising of four local societies and is involved in many activities to support various social issues. In the recent past; they have organised blood donation camps and welfare activities for the poor and the destitute. At this event they chose to organise a talk on organ donation to encourage them to pledge their organs.

     

    Mr. Ashok Ghosh, Convenor, Bibidha Bangya Samaj Samiti took the initiative to gather a huge number of people for the event. Mr. Amit in his talk spoke about how factors like age of the donor and the health of the organs affect the decision whether it can be used for transplantation; he differentiated between brain death, cardiac death and coma; and about organ sharing and allocation. During the discussion the issue of the cost of transplantation and how many can afford the high-cost incurred was raised. The audience actively participated in the session.

     

    Around 85 people attended the talk and more than 56 of them picked the donor card.
