Organ Donation Awareness for Students of St George’s College, Kerala

  • Organ Donation Ambassador and Intern of MOHAN Foundation, Ms. Bridgit S, a Medical and Psychiatric Social Work student of Stella Maris College, delivered a virtual talk on organ and whole body donation on 13th November 2021. The audience were students of the Department of Botany at St George’s College in Aruvithura, Kerala. Ms. Ishwarya, Research Associate of MOHAN Foundation and Intern Dr. Rachel Chacko were also present during the session. The program was attended by around 45-50 participants.  

    The session began with a formal welcome by the HoD of the college’s Botany department who helped organise the event. He also introduced the speaker Ms. Bridgit an alumni of the institute to the audience. In her talk Ms. Bridgit spoke about organ donation types, organs that can be donated, history of organ transplantation, laws related to transplant and organ donation. The participants were explained the process of registering in the transplant waitlist and for organ donation. Importance of family consent and donor cards was elaborated. Ms. Bridgit discussed the importance of not wasting organs and threw light on the role of MOHAN Foundation in improving organ donation rates were explained. The participants were also encouraged to spread awareness about organ donation among their family and friends.

    Dr. Rachel Chacko spoke in detail about whole body donation, medical and legal criteria, importance of body donation and its benefits. Towards the end, Ms. Ishwarya  shared her experience of counselling a family for tissue donation. The participants shared that they found the talk highly informative and promised to spread awareness among their friends in other departments. 

    MOHAN Foundation is thankful to Mr. Joby Joseph, Head of the Department of Botany, St George’s College for his help in organizing this awareness event for the students.
