On June 27, 2026 an awareness programme on organ donation and transplantation was conducted at the Orthopaedic Outpatient Department (OPD), AGMC & GBP Hospital, Agartala, with the objective of educating patients, attendants, and members of the public about the importance of organ donation and transplantation. The session aimed to enhance awareness and encourage informed discussions on this life-saving cause.
The awareness talk was conducted by Ms. Nipa Modak, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Tripura, who provided a comprehensive overview of the concept of organ donation and transplantation. She explained the significance of organ donation in saving and improving the lives of patients suffering from end-stage organ failure and highlighted the need for greater public participation in supporting organ donation initiatives.
During the session, Ms. Modak elaborated on the concept of brain death and clearly explained how it differs from coma, addressing one of the most common areas of confusion among the public. She emphasized that brain death is a medically and legally recognized form of death, whereas coma is a state of unconsciousness from which recovery may still be possible.
The session also focused on dispelling common myths and misconceptions surrounding organ donation. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and clarify their doubts which were addressed with factual, evidence-based information. This helped build confidence and trust in the organ donation system.
The programme was attended by approximately 19 participants, who actively engaged in the interactive session and showed keen interest in understanding the various aspects of organ donation. The programme concluded on a positive note, enhancing participants' awareness of organ donation and transplantation while encouraging informed discussions and greater community support for this life-saving cause.
Ms. Nipa distributed information leaflets to all the participants at the end of the program.
