  • On October 12, 2023, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, Organ Donation Ambassador from MOHAN Foundation, was invited to give a talk on organ donation at the Seminary Niwas, Duler, Mapusa, Bardez, Goa. Mr. Gabriel thanked Rev. Fr. Mariano Travasso, In-Charge of Seminary Niwas, and the students for the invitation.

Seminary Niwas is a branch of the Minor Seminary of Our Lady, Saligao, Pilerne, Bardez-Goa. It is a residential facility for those young men in their higher secondary education who are contemplating their future as priests at the service of the church.

Mr. Gabriel asked everyone what MOHAN stood for, and after a while, he explained that it is an acronym for Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network. He spoke about the mission of the NGO, how long it's been in service to the people, and its objectives.

He discussed how one can become involved in organ donation and how he himself became involved. His family required a kidney transplant, so he took it upon himself to disseminate the word and raise awareness about organ donation.

He described the two categories of organ donations: living and deceased, as well as the organs that can be donated from the living and after brain stem death. He asked everyone if they knew which institutions in Goa were authorised for organ retrieval and transplantation. He provided the names of the hospitals where organs can be retrieved and transplanted in response to his questions. He also mentioned the two hospitals in Goa that were authorised to perform corneal transplants. He said that organ failure was like a silent tsunami and proceeded to explain the precautions one can take to avoid such a tsunami in one’s life.

Close to 13 seminarians attended the session, and Gift of Life flyers were distributed.
