On July 25, 2025, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, Organ Donation Ambassador with MOHAN Foundation, conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the students of Classes IX and X at Regina Martyrum High School, Assolna, Goa.
The session was held under the aegis of the Diocesan Board of Education, Archdiocese of Goa, and was facilitated by Fr. Jesus and the school faculty.
Using a PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Pereira introduced the students to the key concepts of organ and tissue donation. He explained which organs and tissues can be donated in the event of circulatory and brain stem death, offered a medical definition of brain stem death, and clarified the difference between coma and brain stem death.
To engage the students, Mr. Pereira posed questions about the hospitals in Goa that perform transplants and the types of transplants currently available. Based on their responses, he informed them that kidney and corneal transplants are the only procedures currently performed in the state.
The session included informative videos explaining brain stem death, an introduction to the work of MOHAN Foundation, guidance on how to obtain and use an organ donor card, and a testimonial by Ms. Shreya Siddanagowder. Mr. Pereira also screened the trailer of the film Aye Zindagi to illustrate the real-life impact of organ donation.
He concluded the session by thanking Sr. Anita D’Silva hc, the Headmistress, and the teachers for their support in organizing the session and promoting the cause of organ donation.
Approximately 80 students attended the session. Flyers addressing frequently asked questions on organ donation were distributed at the end of the session. Sr. Anita also requested additional flyers to be distributed to parents during the upcoming PTA meeting on August 2, 2025.
