On July 23, 2025, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, Organ Donation Ambassador with MOHAN Foundation, conducted an awareness session on organ donation for Class X students at Immaculate Heart of Mary High School, Goa Velha, Goa.
Using a PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Pereira introduced the students to the key concepts of organ and tissue donation. He explained which organs and tissues can be donated in cases of circulatory and brain stem death, provided a medical definition of brain stem death, and clarified the distinction between coma and brain stem death.
To engage the students, he asked if they were aware of the hospitals in Goa that perform transplants and which organs or tissues are currently being transplanted. After listening to their responses, he explained that kidney and corneal transplants are the only procedures currently performed in the state.
The session included a presentation featuring informative videos that explained brain stem death, introduced the work of MOHAN Foundation, outlined the steps to obtain and use an organ donor card, and featured a testimonial by Ms. Shreya Siddanagowder. Mr. Pereira also screened the trailer of the film Aye Zindagi to highlight the impact of organ donation.
The session concluded with Mr. Pereira expressing his gratitude to Sr. Anita D’Silva hc, the Headmistress, and the teaching staff for facilitating the session and supporting the cause of organ donation.
Approximately 80 students attended the session. Mr. Pereira distributed flyers addressing frequently asked questions about organ donation, and Sr. Anita requested that additional copies be made available for distribution to parents at the upcoming PTA meeting on August 2, 2025.
