The 15th Indian Organ Donation Day was observed across India on August 3, 2025, commemorating the country’s first successful deceased donor heart transplant, which took place on the same day in 1994. The theme for the year was “Angdaan – Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyan.”
In Tripura, the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), in collaboration with Agartala Government Medical College & Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (AGMC & GBP), organized a program to mark the occasion at Rabindra Satavarshiki Bhawan, Agartala.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Manik Saha, Chief Minister of Tripura. On this occasion, three kidney recipients were felicitated by the Chief Minister to convey to the general public that AGMC & GBP Hospital has successfully commenced kidney transplants and will continue to do so to save lives. He emphasized the significance of deceased donors over living donors and shared that AGMC & GBP Hospital is now focusing on deceased organ donation to help more patients. He stated that greater emphasis would be placed on the procurement of organs from deceased (brain-dead) donors going forward.
Dr. Sankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of AGMC & GBP Hospital, also addressed the gathering and reiterated the hospital’s commitment to promoting deceased organ donation with support from MOHAN Foundation to save more lives in the future.
Following the program, the Chief Minister flagged off a walkathon that began at Rabindra Satavarshiki Bhawan and passed through Orient Chowmuhani, Tulsibati, Ujjayanta Palace, and concluded at Jagannath Bari Press Club.
Mr. Vincent Debbarma (Project Lead, Tripura) and Ms. Nipa Modak (Program Executive, Tripura) represented MOHAN Foundation and played a key role in ensuring the success of the event. Around 300 informational fliers on organ donation were distributed to the public during the walkathon.
The program was attended by approximately 360 participants, including doctors, nurses, nursing and medical students, staff from AGMC & GBP Hospital, teaching and non-teaching faculty from nursing institutes, members of the general public, and parents.
