CME on Deceased Donor Transplantation & Organ Retrieval at AIIMS Rishikesh

  • Dr Sunil Shroff (Managing Trustee) and Ms Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director) from MOHAN Foundation were invited as expert faculty at a CME on Deceased Organ Transplantation & Organ Retrieval organised by Department of Urology, AIIMS Rishikesh in association with Telemedicine Society of India on 29-30 July 2023 at AIIMS Rishikesh.

     

    AIIMS Rishikesh has recently initiated their living renal transplant program and are keen to put systems in place to enable a robust and sustained deceased donation program as well.

     

    Other speakers included Dr Anil Kumar (Director NOTTO) Dr Deepak Gupta (Professor Neurosurgery, AIIMS Delhi) and Dr. Krishan Kumar (Sr. CMO (SAG) OSD, NOTTO).

     

    The workshop covered various topics such as the organ donation scenario in the country, the legal framework in organ donation and transplantation, brain death identification and declaration, grief counseling and making the ask for organ donation, role of NOTTO/ROTTO/SOTTO in organ donation and organ allocation.

     

    Close to 200 participants attended and actively participated in the workshop. Close to 50 others participated online.

    Later in the evening, the movie, “Aye Zindagi” based on the real-life story of Mrs Lalitha Raghuram (Country Director, MOHAN Foundation) was also screened to an audience of over 150 people.

    Day 2 focused on the practical aspects of organ retrieval through didactic lectures, interactive sessions, learning through virtual platform and demonstration on two cadavers. It covered the following aspects:

    • Deceased donor evaluation
    • Steps for kidney alone retrieval
    • Bench dissection and packing
    • Multi-organ retrieval
