Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Arvindo Hi-Tech Private Limited, Prithla, Faridabad, Haryana

  • On February 23, 2021, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session on organ donation for the employees of Arvindo Hi-Tech Private Limited, Prithla, Faridabad, Haryana. The session was organised through an initiative by Mr. Vachan Aggarwal, Co-Chair, Gift an organ, Delhi chapter of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Yi (Young Indians). CII Yi is partnering with MF to take forward the cause of organ donation. Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director, MOHAN Foundation- Delhi NCR was the resource person and Ms. Preeti Goswami, Programme Officer accompanied her.

     

    Arvindo Hi-tech Private Limited is a non-government company situated in Prithla, Faridabad, Haryana. The company is involved in manufacture of spare parts of elevators and other special purpose machinery.

     

    The session began with Ms. Sushma Arvind, EA to Director, Arvindo Hi-Tech Pvt. Ltd, inviting Ms. Pallavi Kumar to conduct the session.  Before beginning the session, she asked some questions to the audience to gauge their understanding about organ and eye donation. She asked- How many people have heard about eye and organ donation? Do you know some cases of organ donation in your family? Mr. Siddharth Gupta, Director- Arvindo Hi-tech Pvt Ltd & Chair- Gift an organ, (CII) Yi informed that he lost his uncle due to unavailability of Liver at the time of need so he understands the value and importance of organ donation. He said we all can save lives of our loved ones if we think positively about this cause and pledge our organs. He informed that he had also pledged to donate his organs. He carries his donor card wherever he goes.

     

    Ms. Pallavi explained the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a simple PowerPoint presentation. The following topics were explained in detail:

    • Organ donation and its need in the society
    • When and how does organ donation take place
    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death
    • Transplant waiting list in India
    • Brain death
    • Difference between brain death and coma
    • Role of MOHAN Foundation
    • Myths and Facts about organ donation
    • Eye donation

     

    The session was very interactive where participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked many queries. To name a few: 

    • What is the maximum time span between recovering organs and tissues and transplantation?
    • How many times a liver can be donated?
    • Is organ donation only possible in case of brain death and not in natural death?
    • Who bears the transplant cost?

     

    At the end of the session, brain death movie was shown to give clarity on the difference between brain death and coma.  Ms. Pallavi informed that major reason behind brain deaths in India is road accidents. She said family discussions on organ donation are much needed. She also explained the importance of eye donation and the whole process of eye donation. She motivated the audience to pledge for eye donation and explained how one could pledge to be an organ donor. 

     

    Mr. Sreevats Gopalakrishnan, Chair- (CII) Yi, Mr. Siddharth Gupta, Director- Arvindo Hi-tech Pvt Ltd & Chair- Gift an organ, (CII) Yi, Mr. Vachan Aggarwal, Co-Chair, Gift an organ, (CII) Yi were the chief participants. They were highly motivated by the session and showed their interest in organising many talks and events on organ donation in collaboration with MOHAN Foundation in near future.

     

    The session was attended by 35 participants and 20 donor cards were distributed.
