  • On January 31st, 2014 an awareness session on “Organ Donation and Transplantation” was conducted by MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR at Tibetan Youth Hostel in Rohini, New Delhi.

Tibetan Youth Hostel is a hostel which was established for the purpose of providing proper accommodation to Tibetan students but more importantly to provide a conducive environment nurtured in our schools and to serve as a forum for interaction with other students of Delhi University on various Tibetan issues.

The hostel is built on 2 acres of land purchased from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on perpetual lease and funded by the SOS Kinderdorf International. It was inaugurated and blessed by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama on March 16th, 1991, in the presence of Mr. Helmut Kutin, Mr.Rabi Ray, honorable Lok Sabha Speaker and other dignitaries.

The session was organized by Mrs.Tsering Dolma, Director, Tibetan Youth Hostel and coordinated by Mr.Dhondup, President, Student Council.

The session was conducted by Ms.Sonam Choedon, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation. The session was attended by 88 college students. The concept of brain death, cardiac death, organ donation and transplantation was introduced through a PowerPoint presentation and clearly explained with appropriate pictures. The session was a very interactive one.

Post the presentation there were queries on brain death, how to become organ donor, importance of carrying donor card etc.  All were handled appropriately. Participants also suggested that health care professionals working in hospitals should be motivated to become organ donors so as to provide encouragement to the general public to do the same.

The talk was so well received that 48 people pledged to donate their organs upon death by signing the donor card and 16 students came forward as volunteers for future events.
