Workshop on Brain Death Identification, Certification and Maintenance for the students of SRM College of Nursing

  • On 20th June 2014, a half day workshop was conducted by MOHAN Foundation at SRM College of Nursing, Kattankulathur. The session was attended by 48 student nurses and 5 staff nurses. Dr Judie, principal of the college organised the workshop for her students.

     

    The workshop started with a presentation on Concepts of Organ Donation by Ms. Kavitha, Marketing Coordinator MOHAN Foundation  who focussed on brain death, its causes and diagnosis, organ and tissue donation and myths and beliefs around organ donation and the Transplantation of Human Organs Act.

     

    Dr. Rajasekhar Perumalla, Liver Transplant Surgeon, SRM Institute for Medical Science (SIMS) took a separate session on the identification and certification of brain dead patient and maintenance of a donor. Brain stem death certification film was screened for the better understanding of the students.

     

    Following that Dr. Sumana Navin, Course Director, MOHAN Foundation spoke on Transplant Coordinator as a Profession, she mentioned that the each transplant Coordinator is a change maker. She also stressed on importance and scope of a transplant coordinator.

     

    Mr. Nethaji, Transplant Coordinator, SRM Institute of Medical Sciencesl shared his experience as a transplant coordinator.  He illustrated the value of a coordinator and a counsellor with many examples.

     

    All students and staff attended the session showed their support for organ donation by signing the donor card. 20 students showed interest to join Transplant Coordinator Training programme and they filled the application forms.
