  • On December 4, 2014, MOHAN Foundation organized a workshop on, “Best practices in approaching potential donor families," with the key people directly associated with the same in Artemis Hospital. Dr Reshma Basu (Head, Critical Care) coordinated in organising the workshop from the Artemis side.

The session started with Ms. Pallavi Kumar making a presentation on,'Counselling of donor families,' followed by screening of videos that demonstrated both poor practices and ideal well-thought out ways to approach families. The videos gave an insight into the best practices of approaching a brain dead patient's family for donation and conveyed to the participants the importance of doctors and transplant coordinators working as a team. They also depicted the need for planning the conversation before approaching the family members and the timing of the approach.

The videos were well received by the participants that consisted of critical care specialists, transplant surgeons, neurophysicians, nurses and transplant coordinators of Artemis Hospital. An intensive discussion followed the screening of the videos and everyone present unanimously agreed that to make the deceased organ donation program successful in the hospital, everyone should work as a team, use the right approach to counsel the potential donor families and empower the transplant coordinator.

Dr Ramdip Ray (Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant Surgery) and Dr Reshma Basu also shared their views with the group and conveyed that all these efforts would go a long way in improving the conversion rate in the hospital.

About 40 participants attended the session.
