Webinar on COVID-19 Challenges and Impact on Organ Donation and Transplantation in Karnataka

  • MOHAN Foundation in collaboration with Jeevasarthakathe, organized a Webinar on COVID-19 Challenges and Impact on Organ Donation and Transplantation on 11th August 2021. The webinar which was also meant to be a refresher training for the transplant coordinators, was moderated by Ms. Lijamol Joseph, Chief Transplant Coordinator of Jeevasarthakathe.

    The webinar began with an introduction by Mr. Shridhar Hanchinal (Hon. Director MOHAN Foundation Karnataka) who was one of the organisers of the event. This was followed by a welcome address by Dr. Kiran Kumar M (Joint Director - Health and Family Welfare Department Government of Karnataka and Member Secretary SOTTO/Jeevasarthakathe).

    The next speaker, Dr. Anil Kumar BT (Professor and Head of Nephrology and Transplant, BGS Global Hospital Bangalore) spoke about the COVID-19 guidelines for deceased donor and living related transplants. Statistics from Karnataka during COVID-19 and transplant outcomes during the pandemic were presented by Ms. Lijamol.

    The segment on clinician’s perspective during COVID had the following speakers share their thoughts: Kidney Transplant – Dr Anil Kumar BT; Liver Transplant –
    Dr. Sonal Asthana (Head - Liver Transplant Unit, Aster CMI, Bangalore); Heart and Lung Transplant – Dr. Julius Punnen (Head of the Department - Heart and Lung Transplant, Narayana Hrudayalaya).

    Dr. Chinnadurai (Head of Critical Care Medicine & ICU, Aster RV, Bangalore) spoke on the topic, ruling out COVID during deceased organ donation.

    Transplant Coordinators from different hospitals in Bengaluru were the next to share their insights. Ms. Spurthy P Fernandes (Columbia Asia Hospital) shared the challenges in recipient counselling and care during COVID-19; Ms. Aishwarya Narayanan (Aster RV) spoke about special care during COVID-19, donor side coordination and shared what made deceased donations work even during COVID- 19. Mr. Shyam (Narayana Hospital) shared about pediatric donations during COVID-19.

    Around 62 people attended the webinar. Time was allocated for questions and discussions at the end of every segment. Mr. Shridhar Hanchinal delivered the closing remarks, thanking the speakers and attendees.
