MOHAN Foundation conducted a Training Program at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy (TNPA), Vanadalur, Chennai on 23 July 2026. Around 35 participants, comprising Sub Inspectors (SIs) and Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) from various districts across Tamil Nadu, attended the session as part of their training program. Information brochures on Lung Health, eye donation and organ donation, green ribbons and police awareness posters were distributed to all the participants.

The program commenced with a brief introduction to MOHAN Foundation by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, who highlighted the organization's mission and its commitment to promoting deceased organ donation in India.
Ms. Arshiya Fathima, Senior Project Executive screened a motivational video supporting organ donation to engage the participants. This was followed by a talk on Concepts of Organ Donation, that included the why, when and how of donation. An educational video on brain death was screened to help participants understand the significance of brain death in deceased organ donation. The session was highly interactive, with participants actively raising questions and clarifying their doubts. Some of the key questions included:
Whether corneas can be retrieved if a post-mortem examination has been conducted.
The permissible time limits for transplantation of different organs.
The overall process of organ transplantation.
Costs of transplantation
Ms. Arshiya, Mr. Sanjay, and Mr. Peyriyanayagam, who provided detailed explanations and clarified the participants' concerns.
The next session was conducted by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, who explained the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), covering the legal framework governing organ transplantation in India. She elaborated on the regulations related to living organ donation, deceased organ donation, consent procedures, and the legal safeguards established to ensure ethical organ donation and transplantation practices.
This was followed by a session by Mr. Sanjay, Website Manager, TRANSTAN, who provided an overview of the functioning of TRANSTAN (Tamil Nadu Network for Organ Sharing). He explained the process of organ allocation, the criteria used for allocating organs to recipients, the transplantation workflow, and the circumstances under which recipient registrations or organ allocation requests may be declined. His session helped participants gain a better understanding of the transplant and systematic organ allocation process followed in Tamil Nadu.
By engaging discussions the participants appreciated the informative sessions. The awareness program enhanced their understanding of organ donation, brain death, the legal aspects of transplantation, and the role of TRANSTAN in ensuring equitable organ allocation. The participants expressed their commitment to spreading awareness about organ donation within their respective communities and professional circles.
The next session was conducted by Mr. P. Periyanayagam, Transplant Coordinator, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre. He shared several real-life transplant cases that he had personally handled, providing participants with practical insights into the challenges and responsibilities involved in coordinating organ donation and transplantation. His case-based presentation was highly interactive, encouraging participants to ask questions and discuss various aspects of donor management, family counselling, and the transplantation process. The session was well received, and the participants actively engaged throughout the discussion.
The sessions provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of organ donation, brain death, the legal framework governing transplantation, the organ allocation process through TRANSTAN, and the crucial role of transplant coordinators. The real-life case discussions further enriched their learning experience by offering practical insights into the transplantation process.
