  • Dr. Susheela Kamath, HOD - Blood Bank & Senior Consultant - Transfusion Medicine, Fortis Health Care invited MOHAN Foundation to give a talk on “Counselling and approaching the bereaved families for organ donation” for the staff from patient care services department. The program was organized on 3rd December 2014 at Fortis Health Care, Arcot Road, Chennai - the new branch of Fortis Health Care which is set to open shortly. Apart from staff from patient care services department, the program was also attended by a few doctors, nurses and administrative staff.  About 100 employees of the hospital attended the talk.

The program started with an introduction to MOHAN Foundation by Dr. Sumana Navin, Course Director, MOHAN Foundation. After that, Ms. Sujatha Niranjan addressed the gathering on “Counselling and approaching the bereaved families for organ donation”. The talk started with screening a few videos on approaching the families of potential organ donors (the videos were shared by National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), UK with MOHAN Foundation for training purpose).

Counselling the families at the time of grief and approaching them for organ donation is one of the most crucial steps in deceased organ donation. The success relies on the counsellors’ empathic approach and also the care provided by the entire team.

The various kinds of emotions expressed by the families and the different stages of grief that the families go through were discussed. The approaches and skills that could be used to make the families to understand and accept the loss were explained. The do’s and don’ts in grief counseling and handling the families having myths and misconceptions about organ donation were also discussed during the session.

After the talk, the participants raised a few questions such as “Is it comparatively easy to get consent from the illiterate families for organ donation than the literate?” A few examples were shared to describe how the families had supported the cause irrespective of being literate / illiterate.

The program ended with a vote of thanks by Ms. Sumitha Karthik, Head - Patient Care Services, Fortis Health Care, Arcot Road.
