Talk on Organ Donation for Students of KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore

  • Mr. K. Damodharan, Assistant Professor and Programme Officer of the Youth Red Cross at KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology organised an event to spread awareness about organ donation and transplantation among the students and faculty of the institute. The YRC at KPRIET has been actively promoting many social causes and regularly organises medical and blood donation camps in remote areas.

    Ms. Ishwarya Thyagarajan, Research Associate from MOHAN Foundation virtually addressed the audience who had assembled in the seminar hall of the institute’s campus in Coimbatore on the 13th of February 2021.

    The welcome address was delivered by Mr. Nigun Sanjai, a student and the following topics were covered in the one hour session:

    • Concepts of organ donation and transplantation
    • Types of death and donors
    • Organs and tissues that can be donated under different circumstances
    • Brain death
    • The Transplantation of Human Organs Act
    • Voluntary body donation
    • Myths
    • Statistics – national and international numbers
    • Advances in the transplant field
    • Organ donation in media – a trivia quiz on Tamil films that dealt with organ donation

    Around 150 people were present in the audience who shared positive feedback and how the session helped clarify misunderstandings like organs could be donated even after natural death.  
    Ms. Kavyanjali, a student thanked the speaker and the participants as the event came to a close
