MOHAN Foundation Delhi-NCR, conducted an awareness session at Sardarni Sada Kaur Khalsa Girls Higher Secondary School, Darya Gang, Delhi on August 12, 2014.
The school was established in 1943, by the Guru Nanak Vidya Bhandar Trust. It is a government aided charitable school, that educates approximately 1100 girls, coming from the weaker and under privileged section of society, completely free of cost. It was awarded the Indira award in 2013 for being the best school under this category in Delhi.
The talk was initiated by Ms Simi Singh ( a volunteer of the Foundation) and Ms Nicky Singa ( a director of the school). The session was conducted by Ms Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi -NCR). In her presentation she introduced the Foundation and explained to the young girls, concepts of organ donation and transplantation, emphasizing the special need of spreading awareness in India, and how each person can proactively be involved in spreading this message. A short film on 'Brain Death' was also shown to the children to explain the concept better. It was an interactive session with the girls and the teachers asking questions and sharing their understanding of the topic. It was encouraging to see how quickly the young mind picks up even a complicated and intense mandate like organ donation and brain death.
One girl shared that both her grandparents have on many occasions expressed their need to be organ donors once they are no more. She admitted that no one in the family had ever taken them seriously and the talk helped her realize how important this act is. She said that she would go back and speak to them and assure them that their wishes would be fulfilled.
The principal showed interest in her students being further involved in the 'Peer Educators' program, an initiative by the Foundation to train a select group of school students to spread awareness on organ donation.
The talk was attended by about 30 students of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 along with 10 teachers and administrative staff.
