Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Nagpur invites Organ Donation Ambassador for a session

  • July has been declared as Organ Donation Month with the launch of ‘Angdaan Mahotsav’ by the Central Government of India. Rising to the occasion, Prof. Dr. Raghuvanshi, the Director of Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT) under Symbiosis University, Nagpur invited Mr. Devang Chhaya, Life Member and Ambassador, MOHAN Foundation for conducting an Organ Donation Awareness Session. 

    The "Gift of Life" was conducted on 19th July, 2023 as a part of the Induction Program - Aagman 2K23, organized for its 150 First Year B.Tech CSE students.  The session was also attended by senior faculty members including Shri Nishant Nikam and Dr. Gagandeep Kaur. 

    The ‘Gift Of Life’ Session was delivered through a lecture-cum-presentation aimed to spread awareness regarding Human Organs & Tissues Donation & Transplantation and introduce the participants to various concepts and aspects involved in donation and transplantation of human organs and tissues.

    Some of the salient issues covered were: 

    (a)  Difference between body donation and organ donation 

    (b)  Is organ donation legal?

    (c)  Current scenario of organ donation in India & why we need more and more cadaver organ donors 

    (d)  How to pledge organs? 

    (e)  Different organs that can be donated by living donors, and in the event of Circulatory death and Brain Stem Death.

     (f)  Brain Stem Death: concept, main causes and certification process 

    (g)  Time window available for transplantation of organs from deceased donor; Green corridor etc. 

    (h)  Functioning of Organ allocation network: ZTCC, SOTTO, ROTTO, NOTTO.  

    The participants were informed of the multifarious activities of MOHAN Foundation as the leading NGO spearheading the Organ Donation and Transplantation movement in India as well as the various courses being conducted by it. They were also informed of the online process of pledging their organs and tissues and obtaining their donor card from www.mohanfoundation.org portal. 

    At the end, various doubts of the participants were clarified and myths and superstitions surrounding organ donation were dispelled to help them take an informed decision to pledge their organs.  

    The management of Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT) deserves compliments for giving due importance to such a humanitarian issue by including the session as a part of its Induction Program. This has contributed to spreading awareness regarding the ultimate altruistic gesture of Organ Donation amongst its students. It may be mentioned that SIT has hosted the Organ Donation Session as a part of its Induction program for fresh entrants for the second consecutive year.
