Stakeholders’ Meeting on Organ Donation in Manipur

  • MOHAN Foundation called for a stakeholders’ meeting in Manipur as it took steps to establish its operations in the north eastern region of India. The meeting took place on 17th January 2019 at the Classic Grande, Imphal.   Brain death identification and organ donation were the primary themes that were discussed.

    Health Secretary Dr. Rajo Singh, Intensivists, Neurologists, Nephrologists, Transplant Surgeons, a Regional Medical Officer, two Police Officers and a team from Shija Hospital were the participants in the meeting. Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director and Ms. Sorokhaibam Roma Devi, Transplant Coordinator represented MOHAN Foundation. Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee of MOHAN Foundation also joined the meeting over phone.

    Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram spoke about the importance of brain death certification, organ donation and their requirement in the state.  The following topics were also discussed:

    • Necessity and importance of organ donation
    • Type of donors
    • Difference between brain death and circulatory death
    • The tissues that could be donated in case of natural death
    • Brain death and the organs and tissues that can be donated in case of brain death
    • Importance of Donor Cards
    • Using Helpline number and MOHAN Foundation website

    Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram also answered few questions that the doctors had following her talk. The session came to a close with dinner.
