Seminar on “Deceased Organ Donation” at Manipal Hospitals, Bengaluru

  • To mark organ donation day, Manipal Hospitals, Bengaluru organized a half-day seminar on “Deceased Organ Donation” on 6th August 2015 for its doctors, ICU nurses and transplant coordinators. Around 40 members from the hospital and representatives from Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK) participated in the programme.

    The programme started with the welcome address by Dr. Olithselvan, Liver Transplant Surgeon, Manipal Hospitals. Mrs. Sujatha Niranjan, MOHAN Foundation addressed the gathering on “Transplantation of Human Organs Act, Rules and Amendments” followed by “Ethical views on organ donation and transplantation”. Directed donations, families’ decision overruling the willingness of the deceased to donate organs were the few points discussed by the forum. Dr. Vijayanand Palaniswamy, Adult and Paediatric Intensivist spoke on “Approaching the deceased donor families”. He narrated his counselling experience with bereaving families and the different approaches that helped the families to say “Yes” for organ donation”. The last session on “Brain dead donor – Optimization” was addressed by Dr. Sunil Karanth, Intensivist, Manipal Hospitals. The programme was found very much informative and interactive.
