Self Help Group members learn about organ donation on Women’s Day

  • On 8th March 2014 an awareness talk on organ donation was organized by trainees from the Department of Social Work, Madras Christian College, Tambaram. The students wanted to make Women’s Day celebration more meaningful and pass the message to support the concept of organ donation.  The participants of the programme were members of Women Self Help Group in Adambakkam Chennai.  They requested Cadaver Transplant Programme to depute the speaker for the programme. Ms. Sunitha A.T, Transplant coordinator MOHAN Foundation conducted the session on the important of saving life through organ donation.

     

    The session  started with  informal interaction to gauge their level of understanding about organ donation. This was followed be discussion on the myths in organ donation and later a documentary film and a powerpoint presentation on Concept of organ donation and transplantation were shown.

     

    The following topics were covered during the talk:

    • Importance of organ donation
    • Types of donations – live and deceased donation
    • Difference between Natural Death, Coma and Brain Death
    • Organs that can be donated in cardiac death and drain death
    • Eye donation
    • Preservation time of organs
    • Importance of Donor card

     

    Totally 75 Self Help Group members participated in the programme. At the end of the session Ms. Sunitha thanked the students from the Department of Social Work, Madras Christian College, for their efforts.
