Patient Education on 'Kidney Transplant - A Gift of Life' in Tamil, in partnership with TANKER Foundation and IFKF-WKA

  • On 18th August 2021, TRIOMPH (Transplant Recipients of India and Organ failure patients - a Movement to Provide Hope), a Patient Support Group initiative by MOHAN Foundation organised a patient education programme on 'Kidney Transplant - A Gift of Life' in Tamil. This workshop was organised in association with TANKER Foundation and International Federation of Kidney Foundations – World Kidney Alliance (IFKF - WKA). About 50 dialysis patients, caregivers & dialysis technicians of TANKER Foundation attended the programme. This workshop aimed at educating end stage renal disease patients with complete information about renal transplantation and quality of life after transplant. This programme was supported by SBI Foundation.

     

    The workshop began with a welcome note by Mrs. Latha A. Kumaraswami, Managing Trustee, TANKER Foundation. She expressed her gratitude towards MOHAN Foundation and TRIOMPH for their exemplary work in the field of organ donation and transplantation.

     

    Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi, Associate Director - Courses, MOHAN Foundation was the speaker at the virtual programme. The common challenges that dialysis patients face in their daily lives including financial burden were discussed. A comparison of estimated expenses involved in dialysis for long term verses kidney transplant, quality of life after transplant, procedures involved in living donor as well as deceased donor kidney transplant were explained in detail. The requirements in accordance with the transplant law for organ donation and transplantation were also addressed. The participants were introduced the state and national funding schemes available for transplant surgeries and organisations / crowd funding platforms to approach for financial assistance.

     

    Kidney transplant recipients Mr. Muthukumaraswamy and Mr. Subramanyan and living kidney donor Mrs. Seethalakshmy (donated one of her kidneys to her husband, Mr. Subramanyan) shared their journey and life after transplantation and donation.

     

    The workshop came to an end with vote of thanks by Mrs. Latha A. Kumaraswami. She conveyed her immense gratitude to MOHAN Foundation and other organisers for making this workshop a great success.
