Organ donation awareness talk at GVK Emergency Medicine Research Institute, Chennai

  • The GVK Emergency Medicine Research Institute (EMRI) conducted a pan India campaign to promote organ donation among their staff.  MOHAN Foundation was invited to talk on organ donation at GVK EMRI premises in Mount Road Chennai on 12th October 2018.

    Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, of MOHAN Foundation and Ms. Synthiah David and Mr. Amal Augustin interns from Madras Medical Mission College of Health Sciences were deputed to conduct the session.

    The interns set up an information and registration desk, green ribbons and brochures were distributed to the audience on arrival to the lecture hall. The session was started at 9 o clock by Mr. Prabudoss, Head Marketing in Hospital Relations who welcomed everyone and gave the significance of the green ribbon and the need for the awareness. He introduced Mr. Selvakumar,  State Head of Operations who gave a small gist about organ donation and highlighted the importance of organ donation. Then Dr. Sivagurunathan. C Head of Emergency Medicine spoke on the need for organ donation and that learning about it will make the staff volunteer to the cause.

    The session was taken over by Dr. Hemal Kavinde. First a film on the history of organ donation was shown, followed by a concept talk by Dr.  Hemal.

    The following topics were covered:  

    • Organ donation
    • Need of organ donation
    • Brain death, and the importance of time
    • Causes of brain death
    • The deceased organ donation process in a hospital
    • Myths and Facts about organ donation
    • Law and Govt. authorities in Tamil Nadu
    • About MOHAN Foundation

     

    The concept of brain death was clarified by a video which helped the audience to understand about the brain death in detail. And finally the session ended around 11:45A.M with a ‘Thank you Donor’ video.

    Many of the staff volunteered in taking pictures with the Donor Card showing their support towards Organ Donation. The GVK EMRI had also set a signature campaign, where all the staff signed up.  There were totally 50 staff who attended the talk and almost all registered as Donors.
