Organ Protection and Organ Donation Initiative by M.V. Hospital for Diabetes starts with an awareness session on Organ Donation

  • On 29th  May 2014 as a run up  to the of launch of India’s first Organ Protection and Organ Donation initiative, the M.V. Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram invited MOHAN Foundation to delivered a talk on Organ Donation to its staff. 120 staff members attended the session.

     

    Ms. Kavitha S. Marketing Coordinator and Ms. Sunitha A. T. Transplant Coordinator, represented MOHAN Foundation. Dr. Vijay Vishwanathan, Head and Director, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes welcomes the staff and stated that the hospital has started a unique project called “Target 7% initiative” where patients with diabetes are followed up through SMS and regular follow up to achieve a HBA1c of 7% . Maintaining this level (under 7%) can help prevent organ failure. He said that they are happy to join MOHAN Foundation in spreading the word of Organ Donation.

     

    Following that Ms. Kavitha addressed the gathering. The following topics were covered during the talk:

    • Importance and need of organ donation
    • Difference between Natural Death, Coma and Brain Death
    • Organs and tissues  that can be donated in cardiac death and brain death
    • Eye donation
    • Importance of Donor card
    • TNOS website and Transplant Registry
    • Organ Donation Toll free helpline number and website
    • Transplant Coordinator  - as a profession and training programme

     

    At the end of the talk motivational video was screened. An information desk was placed in the lobby for registration and issue of donor cards. Nearly 75 staff members registered as Organ Donors.
