Organ Donation Awareness for nursing students at Dr. M. G. R Educational and Research Institute University

  • On Feb 22,  2022, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session for the first year students of Faculty of Nursing of Dr.M.G.R Educational and Research Institute. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde of MOHAN Foundation conducted an hour’s session for the 85 students. 

     

    Dr. Prof. Hema V. H, Principal of the Faculty of Nursing introduced the topic and explained how  organ donation started. She requested the students to make use of the knowledge being shared today. 

     

    Dr. Hemal Kanvinde gave a talk on Concepts of Organ Donation. She explained what and when organs and tissues can be donated. She played an educational video on Brain death - causes and certification.  She also elaborated on the law, statistics and need for organs.  Pledging for organs was also explained. At the end of her talk, she played a video by a Heart Recipient. This touched the hearts of the students.  

    Discussion was on the importance of a donor card, time gap between the brain stem death testing and why the need for four doctors for certification. 

     

    This was followed by a short quiz session. 

     

    Next session was activity based learning. Dr. Hemal distributed placards with names of all stakeholders involved in a Deceased Donation process. She then went step by step through the protocol  for Organ donation. The stakeholders were asked to come onto stage at every step. All the students could understand the complexities involved in coordinating a deceased donation. 

     

    The session ended with a vote of thanks by a student.  MOHAN Foundation thanked Ms. Lissy one of the Faculty of Nursing for organizing the session.
