Organ Donation Awareness for Staff and Students of NEERI

  • MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness programme for the staff and students of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) on September 27th 2019. Mrs. Jaya Sabjiwale, Faculty and Cultural Secretary of NEERI had extended the invitation and Dr. Ravi Wankhede Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur was the speaker at the event.

    Dr. Shilpa Paranjape, Program Coordinator – NEERI delivered the welcome address. Around 80 people, including Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Director – NEERI, students and staff of the institute were present on the occasion.   

    Dr. Wankhede began his talk by introducing MOHAN Foundation and went on to talk about organ and tissue donation and transplantation. He covered various aspects of the subject in detail in his lecture including the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, the offences and penalties related to malpractices in organ donation and transplantation.

    The following topics were discussed in detail:

    • What is organ failure and what are its causes?
    • Who can donate organs?
    • When can organs be donated?
    • What is living donation?
    • What is natural death and brain death?
    • What is brain death and coma?
    • Age criteria to donate organs.
    • What is the time period to donate organs after death?
    • Myths and misconceptions around organ donation.
    • How to register as an organ donor?

     

    All the doubts of the participants were clarified by Dr. Ravi Wankhede. 5 participants registered as organ donors and received their donor cards. The programme came to an end with Dr. Shilpa Paranjape giving the vote of thanks.
