Organ Donation Awareness for NSS Students of St. Joseph’s Indian College, Bangalore

  • Mr. Sharan Kumar and Ms. Preranika Madabhushi invited MOHAN Foundation to conduct an interactive session on the subject of organ donation for the NSS students of St. Joseph’s Indian College in Bangalore. The online session which took place on the 27th September was attended by around 120 students.

    Transplant Coordinators Mrs. Hemavathi, Mr. Marulappa LN and Mrs. Sheetal Mundada joined Mrs. Ranjini Shankar M S, Project Manager of MOHAN Foundation for the session.    

    The following topics were discussed in detail:

    • Brain Stem Death
    • Circulatory Death
    • Jeevasarthakathe and its role
    • Organ allocation system in Karnataka
    • The burden of organ failure and need for organ donation
    • Importance of a Donor Card
    • MOHAN Foundation’s work

    During the interaction, the audience raised the following questions:

    • How do hospitals ensure organ compatibility
    • How are organs persevered when being transported?
    • Green Corridor
    • Does my age/fitness level disqualify me from being a donor?
    • Difference between solid organs and tissues
    • Distribution of the organs
    • Can patients with diabetes be organ donors?
    • Organ commerce and penalties
    • Can patients with communicable disease be donors?
    • Can COVID positive patients be donors?
