Sqn Ldr (Retd) Dr. Ravi Wankhede was invited to deliver a talk on Organ Donation Awareness at the Head Quarters of South West Air Command of Indian Air Force at Ahmedabad on 19th October 2015.
Principal Medical Officer (PMO) Air Cmde Achal Kumar took the initiative to organize the event. Air Marshal Ravinder Kumar Dhir, AVSM, VM Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief and Mrs. Neelam Dhir who is the Regional President of the Air Force Wife’s Welfare Association along with other senior Staff officers, Airmen and their families were present in large numbers.
In the beginning Dr. Ravi Wankhede informed about the MOHAN Foundation and its activities. Dr. Wankhede gave a PPP on the historical, social, religious, legal and the importance of organ donation. He emphasized on the need to understand the concept of Brain death, which should be accepted as a permanent and irreversible condition. If the family of the deceased consent to donate the organs and tissues, such persons can help several people live. He said such organ donation is common in the developed countries. In our country the number is pathetic due to ignorance and religious misconceptions. He gave example of Tamil Nadu which has made tremendous progress in the topic and has set an example for other States to emulate. He also mentioned that the Armed forces are also participating in the organ sharing and more importantly helping to carry the organs. Dr. Wankhede thanked the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy for their humanitarian contribution to save several lives.
Air Commodore Achal Kumar, gave a brief talk and showed a video specially prepared for the audience on organ donation. Group Captain S K Verma Commanding Officer gave a vote of thanks to Dr. Ravi Wankhede and Mrs. Kiran Wankhede to have come all the way from Nagpur. Several people picked up pledge form which would be sent by post to Nagpur Centre of MOHAN Foundation. Air Marshal R K Dhir and Mrs Neelam Dhir readily accepted to pledge organ donation along with other senior officers and ladies too. The PMO assured that the message of Organ donation would be displayed in the Station Medical Centre for all times.
