Organ Donation Awareness at NCC Officers Training Academy

Updated on Monday, May 13, 2019
  • NCC Officers Training Academy, Kamptee (NCC OTA) was established with a view to train the Associate NCC Officers (ANO) and officers of other ranks who are posted in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) units in colleges and schools all over the country. ‘NCC is one of the greatest cohesive forces of the nation, bringing together the youth hailing from different parts of the country and molding them into united, secular and disciplined citizens of the nation,’ is the motto of NCC. A number of training courses are conducted here, in order to spread knowledge among the youth of the country who join NCC. It is with this view that the Academy has been inviting Dr. Ravi Wankhede, an Armed Forces Veteran himself, to talk to the ANOs on organ donation and transplantation, for past several years.

The latest talk was held on 4th May 2019, wherein Dr. Wankhede explained about organ donation and transplantation using a PowerPoint presentation. About a hundred ANOs were present on the occasion. The presentation covered types of donors, living as well as deceased. He explained in detail about ‘brain death’ a permanent and irreversible condition, wherein the organs are functional due to ventilator support and hence could be useful in saving the lives of several people. As such patients are unstable, the decision to consent organ donation by the families has to be made at the earliest. This becomes easy if the people are knowledgeable about the subject.

Dr. Wankhede remarked, many people from the developed countries agree to donate as they are aware of the subject, whereas in India the number is dismal. This is due to unawareness, religious misconceptions, superstitions and a general lack of motivation amongst Indians towards social causes. He said NCC is a part of the country’s pride of its Armed Forces. The ANOs help in shaping soldierly qualities in the country’s youth. They can also help the cadets all over the country to understand organ donation and its importance. He said MOHAN Foundation will help anybody interested in organizing awareness programmes in their workplace or residence.

18 participants signed the pledge forms and were given organ donor cards. Lt. Col. Rakesh Tiwari thanked Dr. Ravi Wankhede for addressing the ANOs.
