Organ Donation Awareness Talk at St. Bridget’s Institute of Home Nursing, Aldona, Bardez, Goa

  • On June 10, 2023, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, Organ Donation Ambassador from MOHAN Foundation, was invited to give a talk on organ donation at St. Bridget’s Institute of Home Nursing (a project of Caritas – Goa), Aldona, Goa.

Mr. Gabriel thanked Sister Anna, the institute’s in charge, and the students for the invitation and started with showing the video on brain stem death.

He asked everyone what MOHAN stood for, and after a while Gabriel explained that it is an acronym for Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network. He spoke about the mission of the NGO, how long it's been in service to the people, and its objectives.

Gabriel discussed how one can become involved in organ donation and how he himself became involved. His family required a kidney transplant, so he has taken it upon himself to disseminate the word and raise awareness about organ donation.

There were roughly 15 students. Gabriel posed a few queries, such as what was circulatory death, and provided each student with a pen for their responses.

He told them that, as home nurses, when they come to know of any person with diabetes or hypertension, they can tell them to do a routine blood and urine test for creatine level, protein in urine, etc. Some wanted to donate blood, so Gabriel informed them that when there is the next blood donation camp, he’ll let them know, as MOHAN Foundation puts an information desk at such camps.

Five students signed up for organ donation, and fifteen Gift of Life flyers were distributed.

Gabriel suggested that, as prospective nurses, they should also spread the word about organ donation, and that we should make the necessary changes and save lives before moving on.
