Organ Donation Awareness Program Successfully Engages Railway Pensioners in Secunderabad

  • A comprehensive organ donation awareness program was successfully conducted on July 12, 2025, at the Railway Pensioners' Welfare Association Hall in Malkajgiri Road, Safilguda, Secunderabad.

    The program was jointly led by Project Manager Mr. Venkatesh Kattela and Dr. Bhanu Prakash from the MOHAN Foundation. Approximately 200 retired senior citizens, all members of the Railway Pensioners’ Welfare Association, actively participated in the session. The event was meticulously organized by K. Gurunath, President Zonal Treasurer, and K. Narayana, Secretary, AGS/PAR, Zonal President of the association. Sanath Kumar, a member of the association, played a key coordinating role.

    The session also featured speeches from other NGOs, with Sravan Kumar from Sadashaya Foundation speaking about eye donation and Aravind from Vasan Eye Care addressing whole body donation. Following their insightful contributions, Mr. Venkatesh Kattela comprehensively covered essential aspects of organ donation, including:

    • What organ donation is
    • Different types of organ donation
    • The critical distinction between brain death and cardiac arrest
    • The significance of the donor card
    • The consent process involved in organ donation
    • Common myths and misconceptions
    • The urgent need for organ donation in society

    The participants listened with great interest and actively engaged in the discussion. During the session, the speakers emphasized the life-saving importance of organ donation and clarified common doubts about the process, provided details on brain death, and shared inspiring real-life stories of successful organ transplants. The team also provided clear instructions on how individuals can pledge their organs and the necessary steps to register as a donor. Dr. Bhanu Prakash actively encouraged participants to donate their organs by displaying donor card.

    In addition to the awareness session, 170 participants availed themselves of free eye check-ups conducted by Vasan Eye Care, demonstrating a holistic approach to health and well-being.

    At the conclusion of the session, donor cards and brochures were distributed, facilitating immediate action for those inspired to pledge. The event successfully raised strong awareness among the elderly community, highlighting their crucial role in promoting this noble cause.
