Online Awareness Session on Organ Donation Conducted for the Rotarians of Rotary Club Vasudha District-3054, Udaipur, Rajasthan

  • On July 12, 2021, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an online awareness session on organ donation for the Rotarians of Rotary Club Vasudha District-3054, Udaipur, Rajasthan. The session was initiated by Dr. Sushma Arora (President-Rotary Club Vasudha District-3054) who had attended the online awareness session on organ donation conducted by Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi in the month of May for the members of Scholars Foundation, Udaipur and became driven and motivated to organize the session for members of Rotary Club Vasudha District-3054, Udaipur. Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi was invited as the speaker.

     

    The session was attended by doctors, teachers, students and members of various NGOs, Clubs & Schools in Udaipur such as Gayatri Shaktipeeth, Seva Bharti, Vivekananda Kendra, Bharat Scouts & Guides, Happy Om Senior Secondary School, Maharana Mewar Public School, Government Girls Senior Secondary School (Vasudha) and Time Bank of India. Members of MOHAN Foundation Jaipur Citizen Forum (MFJCF) also participated in the session. An IT Professional from Pune and a doctor from Mumbai also attended the session.

     

    Rotary Club Vasudha District-3054 was chartered in 2018. The club currently has 20 passionate social and professional female leaders who are committed to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace in the societies.

     

    At the beginning of the session, Dr. Sushma welcomed all the participants and gave a brief introduction of the topic of the session. Ms. Garima Bordia, Secretary- Rotary Club Vasudha District-3054 introduced Dr. Muneet and invited her to begin the session.

     

    Dr. Muneet explained the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a simple PowerPoint presentation. To engage the participants in an open discussion, she asked that why should a healthy and a living person donate his/her organs to save the life of his/her loved one when the dead who are in a condition to donate organs were being buried or burnt because the families do not give consent for organ donation.

     

    The following topics were explained in detail: 

    • Organ donation and its need
    • When and how does organ donation take place
    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death
    • The transplant waiting list in India
    • Brain death
    • Difference between brain death and coma
    • Contraindications to organ donation
    • Transplant Law
    • Role of MOHAN Foundation
    • Organ donation Myths and Facts
    • Eye Donation

     

    A short movie was also shown to the audience to give clarity on “brain death” and to enumerate the difference between coma and brain death. The participants were interactive during the presentation and asked many questions. To name a few:

    • Can a 99-year-old person donate his organs/body?
    • Can a person donate corneas post cataract operation?
    • What is vegetative state of coma?
    • What is the difference between organ donation and body donation?
    • Why is organ donation not happening in hospitals located in towns?

     

    Dr. Muneet also explained the whole process of eye donation. She informed the participants that eye donation is a simple procedure that can be even done at home. She motivated the participants to begin with promoting eye donation in their respective areas.

     

    During the presentation, one of the participants Mr. Kundan Bhatewara, President-Scholars Foundation gave special mention of MOHAN Foundation Jaipur Citizen Forum (MFJCF) and appreciated their efforts to start a very important initiative to create awareness on organ donation through Driving License in Rajasthan. With this initiative, Rajasthan transport department has become first in the country to make it mandatory for driving license applicants to declare their willingness or unwillingness for organ donation declaration; nearly 2 lakh applicants have agreed to deceased organ donation between September 2020 and June 2021.

     

    At the end, Dr. Sushma gave the vote of thanks. She said the session was very informative with a very powerful message. She shared with the audience that she had signed up for organ & body donation after attending the organ donation session conducted by MF representatives in May 2021 and she was hopeful that after today’s session many Rotarians of District-3054 will come forward and pledge for organ donation. She also expressed her interest in collaborating with MOHAN Foundation to promote organ donation in Udaipur.
