MOHAN Foundation invited to the 13th Indian Organ Donation Day observed by various hospitals in Imphal, Manipur

  • On August 3, 2023, MOHAN Foundation was invited by different hospitals in Imphal, Manipur, namely Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), and Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. (SHRI), to take part in the observation of the 13th Indian Organ Donation Day.

     

    Indian Organ Donation Day is celebrated every year on November 27 to commemorate the contributions made to society by deceased donors and their families. From 2023, the day will be celebrated on August 3 to commemorate the first successful deceased heart transplant in India on August 3, 1994. The objective of the day is to spread awareness among people, recognise the selfless efforts made towards mankind, and re-establish belief in humanity.

     

    Observation at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal.

    Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation, and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, attended the programme.

     

    Ms. Monica started the programme by introducing the awareness campaign "Angdaan Mahotsav" and the importance of the ceremony. Later, she highlighted the specific objectives of the campaign. Giving the detailed action plans that can be done in correspondence with the campaign, Ms. Monica opened the floor to Prof. Laishram Deben Singh, Director, JNIMS.

     

    Prof. Deben, speaking to the group, emphasised the importance of raising awareness among healthcare professionals and the general public in order to increase the number of potential donors and reduce the waiting list. He also extended his deepest gratitude to the MOHAN Foundation team for promoting public awareness about organ donation and coordinating with JNIMS and the state government to facilitate and expand the deceased organ donation programme.

     

    The programme was concluded with a Q&A session, where the news reporters asked a few questions to Prof. Deben. To name a few:

     

    • How many living donor and deceased donor transplants have been performed so far in JNIMS?

    • Do you feel that being able to perform a transplant in a government-run hospital like JNIMS is a symbol of success?

     

    Close to 20 participants attended the programme.

     

    Observation at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

    MOHAN Foundation was invited to the "Indian Organ Donation Day 2023" cum Seminar on "Organ Transplantation," followed by a panel discussion organised by the Medical Society, RIMS, at Mini Auditorium Hall, RIMS, Imphal. Ms. Monica and Ms. Udayini attended the programme.

     

    The session covered different aspects of Organ Transplantation namely- Intensive Care, Nephrology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmology & Medico-legal. Later, a panel discussion on "Organ Transplantation in RIMS, Imphal: The Way Forward" was held.

     

    At the end of the panel discussion, Prof. Sanjib Singh Nepram, Medical Superintendent, RIMS, appreciated the MOHAN Foundation for its contribution towards organ donation in the state of Manipur. Taking the opportunity, Ms. Monica encouraged and appreciated the steps taken by RIMS to make transplantation happen. Also, she urged and requested the authorities to allow MOHAN Foundation to conduct awareness programmes at RIMS.

     

    Close to 150 participants attended the programme.

     

    Observation at Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. (SHRI), Imphal.

    MOHAN Foundation was invited to serve as the program's resource person in conjunction with the celebration of "Indian Organ Donation Day" at Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd.(SHRI), Ms. Monica and Ms. Udayini attended the event, and Ms. Monica was the program's keynote speaker.

    Mr. Moirangthem Rajesh Singh, Transplant Coordinator, SHRI, opened the programme, Dr. Palin Khundongbam, Chairman and Managing Director, SHRI, gave the introductory speech on organ donation and the contribution of the MOHAN Foundation towards augmenting deceased organ donation in the state of Manipur. Dr. Bonney Khundongbam, Chief Executive Officer, SHRI, and Ms. Anisha Khundongbam, Assistant Manager, Operation Management, SHRI, also attended the programme.

     

    Later, Ms. Monica presented an awareness session on "Organ Donation" for the staff and students of the institute. The first session was conducted for the staff of the hospital, and the second session was conducted for the MBBS students of the Medical College.

     

    She covered various aspects, such as:

    • MOHAN Foundation, its aims and objectives

    • Law enacted for transplantation.

    • Types of donors.

    • Facts and myths about organ donation

    • Transplant waiting list in IndStories of patients waiting for deceased donors

    • Importance of the donor card.

    • The importance of family consent in the process of organ donation

     

    At the end of the programme, Dr. Palin appreciated the commendable work done by the MOHAN Foundation in the field of organ donation. Also, he thanked the MF team for sparing time to attend the programme.

     

    Close to 170 participants attended the session.
