MOHAN Foundation invited to conduct organ donation awareness session at St. Marks Senior Secondary Public School, Meera Bagh, New Delhi

  • On January 12, 2023, the MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the teachers of St. Marks Senior Secondary Public School (SMS), Meera Bagh, New Delhi. Ms. Neena Vivek Punj, a biology teacher at SMS, contacted Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation, NCR, to organize a session on organ donation for the teachers of their school. Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi, Program Manager, MOHAN Foundation, NCR, was the resource person for the session. She was accompanied by Ms. Simran.

     

    Previously, in 2015 and 2016, sessions on organ donation were held for the school's students and teachers, respectively. Ms. Anjali Aggarwal, principal of St. Marks School, is a passionate advocate of the cause of organ donation who requested Ms. Neena to coordinate with the MF team in Delhi for organising a session again during their one-week teachers' training workshop.

     

    Ms. Neena welcomed the MF staff at the beginning of the session. Dr. Muneet started the session by asking the teachers about their understanding of organ donation. Many of them shared their expertise on the subject. Dr. Muneet then explained the concept of organ donation with the help of a PowerPoint presentation. She then discussed with them organs that could be donated after natural death and brain death. A short, informative film was shown to the audience to explain the concept of "brain death." She also shed light on the concept of "consent" in relation to deceased and living donors' organ donation. She explained to the participants the various steps involved in a brain death declaration and clarified the concept of legal death.

    • Causes of brain death

    • difference between brain death and coma

    • Contraindications to organ donation

    • Transplant Law

    • Role of the MOHAN Foundation

    • Organ Donation Myths and Facts

    • Status of organ donation in India

    • When and how does organ donation take place?

    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death

    • Cornea donation

     

    The participants asked many queries. To name a few:

     

    • Can corneas be retrieved from the person who died due to cancer?

    • What is the distinction between brain death and cerebral haemorrhage?

     

    At the end, Ms. Saranpreet Kaur, TGT Science, SMS, spoke words of thanks to the MF staff.

     

    Close to 50 teachers attended the session.
