MOHAN Foundation was invited by the Department of Nephrology, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow to help conduct a CME on Deceased Donor Transplantation on May 13 & 14, 2023 at the C V Raman Auditorium, SGPGIMS Lucknow. Dr Sunil Shroff and Ms Pallavi Kumar represented the Foundation at the CME
Experts from various parts of the country were invited to share experiences of their successes and challenges. Some of the speakers who spoke were Dr. Arpita Roy Choudhary (Kolkata), Dr Atul Mulay (Pune), Dr. Swarnlatha Guditi (Hyderabad) Dr. Vivek Kute (Ahmedabad), Dr. Vipin Koushal (Chandigarh) and Dr Deepak Gupta (New Delhi). Dr Thomas Billyard from UK also shared his experiences.
Dr Krishan Kumar from NOTTO and Dr Anil Kumar from DGHS also gave their valuable contribution to help the participants understand the legal framework of deceased organ donation in India and the role of NOTTO/ROTTO/SOTTO in organ allocation as well as the various schemes and benefits available for patients.
The workshop covered various topics such as the organ donation scenario in the country, brain death identification and declaration, grief counseling and making the ask for organ donation. Activities were also conducted to engage the participants and to help them understand the role of various stakeholders in deceased organ donation. A film on the wrong and right approach to family counseling was also shown to the participants.
The panel discussion with stakeholders particularly Mr Alok Kumar, PS Med Education and Mr Parth Sarthisen Sharma, PS Health, was the highlight of the meeting, and the commitment of the Govt to expanding deceased donations boosted us for taking a step forward.
