Gift of life: World Organ Donation Day celebrated at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital Puducherry.

  • On 27 November, 2013 the World Organ Donation Day an Awareness on Organ Donation and Transplantation was organized at Department of Nephrology and Ophthalmology at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital Puducherry. Two departments of the hospital - nephrology and ophthalmology and MOHAN Foundation jointly celebrated this day. There were talks on kidney donation, cornea donation and Concepts of organ donation.

     

    Dr. Hemachandran, Assistant Professor Department of Nephrology

    He gave an introduction to organ donation. He also explained about status, causes and problems of kidney failure.

     

    Dr . Swathi, Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology

    She covered the following topics:

    1. Important of cornea donation

    2. Problems of corneas

    3. Processof cornea donation

     

    Mr. Ananth R. Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation

    He spoke on the Natural death, Brain death; difference between natural death and brain death; difference between brain stem death and coma; the main causes of brain death; organs that can be donated, the age at which organs can be donated, the number of hours the various organs can be preserved before transplantation; importance of the donor card and MOHAN Foundation Activities.

     

    Mrs. Solochana, Public Relation Officer rendered the Vote of thanks to all.

     

    70 staff of the hospital participated in the sessions. 47 of them picked up a donor card and brochure.
