CEVA campaigns for Organ Donation in Kochi

  • Cyriac Elias Voluntary Association (CEVA), is  a charitable organization active in the development scenario since 1987 intervening into the lives of the poor and needy through various projects and programmes.  Their recent attention is focused on promoting Organ Donation through an Awareness Generation Campaign thus bridging the gap between need for organ transplantation and donation.  With this in mind, they organized an awareness generation programme for a group of 3 NGO representatives and MSW final year students on August 6, 2014 at CEVA Bhavan, Kochi. The objective of the awareness session was to equip the team to sensitise other NGO and students from their respective colleges. As part of this event they invited Mrithasanjeevani (KNOS) and MOHAN Foundation to give training programme for the participants.

     

    The programme was started with the welcome speech was delivered by Ms. Zera Bai Rajan, Project Officer, CEVA)\.  It was followed by a presentation on concept of Organ Donation  by Mr. Aneesh P V, Transplant Coordinator, KNOS. In his talk he covered the following topics;

    • Mrithasanjeevani
    • Activities of KNOS
    • Organ donation and religious belief.
    • Types of Organ Donation - Live and Deceased Donation
    • Difference between Brain death, Coma and natural death
    • Tissues and organs  that can be donated 
    • Importance of Donor card 

     

    This was followed by a presentation by Mr. Akash Manohar, Project Manager, MOHAN Foundation on Legal and Ethical issues in Organ donation. The following topics were covered:

    1. Transplantation Human Organ act- 1994 and its amendments
    2. Legal Forms to be filled in Live and Cadaver Donation
    3. Activities of MOHAN Foundation
    4. Guidelines for Organ allocation using KNOS Portal.
    5. Transplant Coordinators training Programme.

     

    It was an interactive session in which all participants were proactively engaged in the programme and they volunteered for taking a session on their Learning on Experiences. Total 50 members participated in the programme. They also promised that they would propagate the message on deceased donor organ transplantation in the respective colleges and NGO. In the end the session was concluded with vote of thanks rendered by Ms. Cily Project co-ordinator, CEVA.
