Awareness on Tissue and Organ Donation at RAAK College of Nursing and Paramedical Science

  • On December 5, 2025, an awareness session on organ and tissue donation was organized at RAAK College of Nursing and Paramedical Science, Sultanpet, Puducherry.

    The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Mangayarkarasi A., who introduced the speakers:

    • Mr. Ganesh C, Senior Project Manager, MOHAN Foundation
    • Dr. S. Manikanda Prabhu, Vascular Surgeon, Joint Director, SOTTO–Puducherry
    • Thiru. S. Gnanasekaran, Superintendent in Chief Secretariat (Home Department) and IGGGH & PGI, Consultant, SOTTO–Puducherry
    • Ms. Dhanalakshmi P. M, Transplant Coordinator, SOTTO–Puducherry

     

    Mr. Ganesh C spoke about MOHAN Foundation and highlighted its work in promoting deceased organ donation. He explained the process of corneal donation—when and how it takes place, essential precautions, and common myths versus facts. He also emphasized the importance of the Organ Donation Helpline 1800 103 7100.

    Ms. Dhanalakshmi discussed when, where, and how organ donation occurs, the time sensitivity involved, and the roles of SOTTO, ROTTO, and NOTTO in organ allocation.

    Dr. Manikanda Prabhu provided a detailed explanation of brain death certification, including the tests involved in declaring brain death and the importance of optimizing brain-dead cases. A short video on brain death by Dr. Sandeep Vaish was screened for better understanding.

    Thiru. S. Gnanasekaran spoke about the legal aspects of transplantation and how the Puducherry Government honours and supports families of deceased donors.

    Mr. Ganesh then highlighted the crucial role of Transplant Coordinators in the organ donation and transplantation process. He also introduced the professional courses offered by MOHAN Foundation and elaborated on career opportunities in the field.

    The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Bharathi, Vice Principal.
