Awareness Talk on Organ Donation at a Pharmacy College in Nagpur

  • An awareness program on organ donation was conducted at Guru Nanak College of Pharmacy, Kamgar Nagar, Kamptee Road on 4th October 2018. Dr. Mrs. Mitali M Bodhankar, Associate Professor invited Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur to conduct the session. In her opening remarks Dr. Mitali Bodhankar urged the students and faculty to carefully listen and understand the concepts of organ donation and transplantation.

    Dr. Wankhede began by urging the students to take care of their health and try avoiding accidents. He elaborated on both live and deceased organ donation. He mentioned that owing to myths, in India only a mere 0.48% per million organ donations happen as compared to certain other countries. He gave information about brain death; requirements for a transplant; green corridor; organs and tissues that can be transplanted; who can be an organ donor; how can a person become an organ donor. He also informed the audience about MOHAN foundation and its activities and requested to use the helpline number and website.

    The participants had the following questions:

    • Is ovary transplant is possible in India?
    • What is the life span of recipient after a kidney transplant?
    • Whom to contact for organ donation?

    Around 100 people were present at the sessions and 2 of them signed consent form and took donor cards. At the end of session Dr. Mitali Bodhankar thanked Dr.Ravi Wankhede and the participants.
