Awareness Talk on Organ Donation at Sabarigiri Residential School, Kollam, Kerala

  • On 11th September, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation was organized at Sabarigiri Residential School, Anchal, Kollam, Kerala. The school was established in 1978. It is the first CBSE School in Kollam District, Kerala. Sabarigiri School invited Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS), Mrithasanjeevani to deliver an awareness talk on organ donation to students, parents and teachers. The programme was held at the school auditorium.

     

    The programme started with a prayer song followed by a welcome speech delivered by Mr. Akshay A S, Head Boy, Sabarigiri School. After which; the programme was inaugurated by Dr. Noble Gracious, Assistant Professor, Department of Nephrology, Government Medical College, Trivandrum and Nodal Officer, Mrithasanjeevani, Kerala. The crowd was inspired by his speech. He also dispelled the popular myths about organ donation.

     

    Following which; Dr. V.K Jayakumar, Chairman and Senior Principal, Sabarigiri Group of Institutions and Mrs. Deepa Chandran, Principal, Sabarigiri Residential School and Coordinator, Sabarigiri Group of Institutions addressed the gathering.

     

    Mr. Aneesh P V, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Trivandrum made a presentation on organ donation. He concentrated on the following topics: what is organ donation, importance of organ donation, difference between natural death and brain death, difference between brain death and coma, importance of the donor card and about Mrithasanjeevani.

     

    At the end of the session; Dr. Jayakumar was the first person in the audience to sign the donor card. Followed by Mrs. Chandran signing the donor card. Around 700 members participated in the event.

     

    At the event the school management extended their financial support to two cancer patients and another patient suffering from end-stage kidney failure waiting to undergo transplantation. Dr. Jayakumar distributed the monetary assistance to the patients.

     

    The School representatives expressed their wish to support the cause and to join hands with Mrithasanjeevani in its future activities. Finally; the vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Shanavas A, Teacher, Sabarigiri School.
