On 24th October 2018, MOHAN Foundation Mumbai was invited by Maseena Hospital for conducting an awareness talk on organ donation at Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Private Ltd., Colaba, Mumbai.
The Shapoorgi Pallongi Group (SP group) is a business conglomerate in India with interest in Construction, Textiles, real estate engineering goods, Home appliances, Shipping, Publication, Power and Biotechnology.
Mr. Charudatt Vaidya, Social Worker, Maseena Hospital introduced MOHAN Foundation to the gathered people.
Ms. Jigisha Yadav thereafter took the dais and explained that MOHAN Foundation is an acronym for “Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network”. She shared its mission and objectives and then asked the audience what came to their minds when they thought of organ donation. Their responses were positive.
Ms. Jigisha Yadav went on to share that many Indians are dying due to end stage organ failure and they could have been alive, if they got the life-saving organ in time. The concept of organ donation, types of death, the organs and tissues that can be donated after cardiac death and after brain death, the concept of brain death(brain death video was shown), difference between brain death and coma were discussed.
She conducted 4 sessionsin the first half.
Afternoon session was taken over by Mr. Akash Salve who began with the introductions, saying that many die due to organ failure, due to unavailability of life-saving organs in time and the main cause for this is lack of awareness.He explained how “Organ Donation is a race against time” and how “Green Corridors” are created in order to ensure that the retrieved organs reach the recipients in time, thereby preventing wastage of organs.
A 2 minute video on organ donation was also shown in the end. Mr. Akash conducted 4 sessions in the second half, till 6 pm.
Around 150 people attended the talk and of these, 86 people took the pledge. All queries were satisfactorily answered by Mr. Akash Salve & Ms. Jigisha Yadav.
