Awareness Session on Organ and Tissue Donation at ICA Edu Skills, Rishikesh

  • On June 10, 2026, under the aegis of AIIMS Rishikesh, MOHAN Foundation, in association with Rishikesh Eye Bank, AIIMS Rishikesh, conducted an awareness session on organ and tissue donation at ICA Edu Skills, Rishikesh, on the occasion of “World Corneal Donation Day.” The session was organized at the invitation of Mr. Mukesh Aggarwal, Director, ICA Edu Skills, Rishikesh.

    The session featured presentations by Mr. Mahipal Chouhan, Senior Nursing Officer, Manager at Rishikesh Eye Bank, AIIMS Rishikesh and Mr. Arun Sharma, Program Executive, MF, Uttarakhand. The event saw participation from the staff and students of the institute.

    The session commenced with a presentation by Mr. Mahipal Chouhan who outlined the achievements of the Rishikesh Eye Bank and elaborated on the procedures for eye donation. He emphasized the feasibility of facilitating donations from home following a death and underscored the critical need for eye donation. His address covered key aspects including the role and functioning of an eye bank, causes of corneal blindness, donor eligibility, tissue preservation, corneal evaluation and the process for pledging corneas.

    Mr. Arun Sharma continued the session by engaging participants in an interactive discussion on organ donation. He covered topics such as the importance of organ donation, eligibility criteria for donors, living and deceased donation, brain death and its distinction from coma, eye and skin donation, the Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, living kidney transplantation services at AIIMS Rishikesh, common myths and facts related to organ donation, and the initiatives of MOHAN Foundation, including the Anudaan programme.

    Following the presentation, participants raised several queries, such as:

    • What is the difference between brain death and coma?
    • Can a person with diabetes or other medical conditions become an organ donor?
    • How can an individual register as an organ donor in India?
    • What is the time limit for eye donation after death?
    • Does organ or eye donation affect funeral rites or religious practices?

    The programme concluded with appreciation for the efforts of AIIMS Rishikesh and MOHAN Foundation, and many participants expressed interest in discussing organ donation with their families and making pledges.

    The session was attended by approximately 30 participants, and 11 participants pledged for corneal donation post-session.
