Awareness Session on Organ Donation for Medical Students at KEM Hospital, Parel

  • On 16th September 2019, MOHAN Foundation was invited by Ms. Radhika Joshi - Founder of the Second Chance Project, in association with ROTTO – SOTTO for giving awareness about organ donation to I year MBBS students of KEM Hospital.

    Dr. Jimmy’s talk began with an introduction of MOHAN Foundation, its mission, vision and activities. She then introduced the concepts of organ and tissue donation. She also explained the types of death viz. cardiac and brain death and the organs and tissues that can be donated in both cases. She elaborated on the bone donation procedure which was a new topic for the students. She also described how skin and eye donation can happen even at homes. She then discussed about organ donations that can happen in case of brain death cases and number of lives that can be saved by giving examples of successful transplant stories, articles and news about green corridor which was somewhat familiar to the gathering. She also explained about the religious barriers and myths related to organ donation.

    Finally Dr. Jimmy spoke about brain stem death testing including reflexes and ancillary testing. The students were invited to join the Foundation’s volunteering programme and details of organ donation Toll-free Helpline (1800 103 7100) was also shared.

    About 60 students attended the awareness session. Students were asked to fill pre- and post-survey for a Sociology Project by Ms Radhika Joshi. MOHAN Foundation is thankful to Ms Radhika Joshi and Mrs. Sujata Ashtekar from ROTTO – SOTTO for inviting us and supporting the cause of organ donation.
