Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Department of General Medicine, AIIMS Rishikesh

  • On May 15, 2025, the Division of Organ Transplant at AIIMS Rishikesh, in collaboration with MOHAN Foundation, conducted an organ donation awareness session for the nursing staff of the Department of General Medicine. This was the eighteenth session in an ongoing series aimed at sensitizing nursing officers at AIIMS Rishikesh to the importance of organ donation.

     

    The session was led by Mr. Sanchit Arora, Project Leader at MOHAN Foundation stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh. He was joined by Mr. Deshraj Solanki and Mr. Vrishabh Panchal, Transplant Coordinators at the institute. Nursing officers from the Department of General Medicine were present for the session.

     

    The session began with an introduction to MOHAN Foundation, highlighting its mission and objectives. Mr. Arora delivered a comprehensive presentation covering the following key topics:

    • The importance of organ donation and who can be a donor

    • The distinction between living and deceased donors

    • Organ donation during life and after death

    • The concept of brain death and how it differs from coma

    • Protocols for declaring brain death

    • Eye and skin donation, including cornea preservation post-death

    • An overview of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

    • Living kidney transplantation services at AIIMS Rishikesh

    • Ways individuals can support the cause

    • Common myths and facts about organ donation

     

    Mr. Arora emphasized the urgent need for organ donors in India and encouraged participants to initiate conversations about the subject within their families and communities. He also recommended watching the film Aye Zindagi (available on Zee5 and YouTube) for a deeper understanding of the emotional and practical dimensions of organ donation.

     

    Mr. Solanki provided insights into the hospital’s brain death committee and donor optimization protocols. He shared a recent case of organ donation at AIIMS Rishikesh to illustrate the impact of timely interventions and coordination.

     

    Approximately 18 nursing officers attended the session. They expressed appreciation for the informative and engaging session, noting that it enhanced their understanding of organ donation and their potential role in supporting the cause.
