Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Ambedkar Hospital, Nagpur

  • On 16th November 2019, MOHAN Foundation, in association with Transplants – Help the Poor Foundation and PSM Department of Community Medicine, conducted an awareness session on Organ Donation at Ambedkar Hospital, Nagpur. The session was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Prakash Butle (Professor and HOD, Department of Community Medicine).

    The session was attended by in-house doctors, staff, OPD patients and their relatives and lasted for around 30 minutes. Ms. Prarthana Dwivedi, Transplant Coordinator was the speaker.

    She explained the concepts of organ donation, why and when is transplantation required, various organs that can be donated, types of donors, types of death, viability of organs after retrieval, difference between brain death and coma, Transplantation of Human Organs Act, myths and misconceptions related to organ donation. Information about the toll-free organ donation helpline (1800 103 7100) was also shared.

    The following were a few questions asked:

    • Will the body be disfigured following donation?
    • What are the organs that can be donated while living?
    • How to register as an organ donor online?
    • How will a family know about a registered organ donors’ wish after his death?
    • For how long can corneas be stored?

    About 25 people were present and 15 pledges were taken and few were done online.  MOHAN Foundation is thankful to Ambedkar Hospital and Dr. Prakash Butle for supporting the cause of Organ Donation.
