An early morning start with new thoughts on Organ Donation

  • The Jain Social Group and the Mahavir Garden Laughter Club of Kolhapur invited MOHAN Foundation to give a talk on organ donation on 11 June 2014.  The venue was the Mahavir Gardens and it was an early morning event. Health conscious citizens who were walking, jogging and laughing and doing yoga joined the members of the Jain Social Club to listen about a new topic.

     

    Dr. Hemal Kanvinde was deputed on behalf of MOHAN Foundation to conduct the session.  Mr. Janzar, Secretary of the Laughter Club welcomed everyone. Dr. Hemal explained spoke about Brain death, organ donation, live and deceased organ donation, the law and the process of organ allocation. She highlighted the need to keep fit and be safe. She spoke about the suffering of families due to end stage organ failure a their family member and so the need to say yes for  organ donation. She explained the role of a counsellor and the activities of MOHAN Foundation.  The information brochures were distributed.

     

    Mr. Chandrakant Mehta a veteran with 22 years of experience in eye donation and whole body donation then spoke about the need and process of eye donation. Everyone appreciated his work.  He said that both the people of Kolhapur and the doctors of Kolhapur need to realize the value of organ donation.

     

    At the end of the talks the discussion was on age limits to donation,  do all doctors know a patient is brain dead; how can organ donation  begin in Kolhapur and the importance of family consent for donation.

     

    Mr. Parikh, President of the Jain Social Club thanked all those present and the speakers. Around 40 people had gathered and 25 picked up the donor card.
