An awareness session on organ donation was conducted by Ambassador Kamayani Bali Mahabal at Mission Deep School in the outskirts of Amritsar on April 26, 2022. The audience was 50 girl students from 10th, 11th an 12th std coming from 11 villages such as Khairabad, Dhing Nangal, Tool Kalan, Gumtala, Jagdev Kalan, Rudala and others.
Ambassador Kamayani Bali Mahabal showed videos of Sikhs in UK and Australia being proactive in organ donation. The videos stated that Guru Nanak Dev Ji and other Sikh gurus devoted their lives to humanity, and some sacrificed their lives for the welfare of others. Sikhi teaches the importance of giving and putting others before oneself.
Many myths related to organ donation were discussed including those who donate go to hell and if we donate an eye we will be born blind the next birth.
After the talk students interacted at great length and discussed that it was important to educate community members about how organ donation aligns with Sikhism’s ethos of seva, or selfless service, demystifying the donation process, and encouraging families to discuss donation at home. Our fundamental faith encourages us to spend all our life becoming detached from our body and detached from worldly possessions, It seems ironic that at the end, we would want to become even more attached to the body. But in our faith, once you’ve left your body, it’s just an empty vessel that’s going to decay in the ground or be cremated.
The girls were shown videos of celebrities Raveena Tandon, Shankar Mahadevan and Usha Uthup giving a call for Organ Donation, and were very excited.
The teachers Amrita Kaur, Gurseemapreet Kaur and Rupinder Kaur pledged to donate organs and promised to discuss with their family members, along with the students
Many students proactively gave interviews to the ambassador which have been uploaded on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/kractivist/) and stories have been shared. Mission Deep School will be happy to collaborate with MOHAN foundation to celebrate Organ Donation Day in August 2022.
